For a first visit to Marrakech, three days let you discover several sides of the city if you group outings by neighbourhood. The simplest approach is to spend a day in the heart of the medina, another at the southern monuments, and keep the last for Majorelle, Gueliz or something you previously set aside.
This route assumes three genuinely available days. If your stay includes the outbound and return flight days, reduce the programme: a late arrival does not leave a whole sightseeing day. The walks below are suggestions to adapt to opening arrangements, weather and your mobility.
Prepare a few reservations without fixing the whole stay
Start by noting flight times, accommodation arrival arrangements and the visits that really matter to you. Then book necessary slots while leaving free time around them. Two paid attractions in one day may be enough: meals, journeys and discoveries along the way take time too.
For Jardin Majorelle, start from the garden's official website, which identifies its own ticketing platform as the only official purchase channel. Check what your ticket includes: the garden and museums do not automatically form one visit. Make your chosen slot the fixed point of the third day, then arrange the rest around it.
If staying in the medina, ask your riad for its drop-off point and pedestrian access. Our Marrakech airport transport page covers the options to consider. The first evening can simply be for settling in and getting to know the neighbourhood.
Day 1: finding your bearings in the heart of the medina
Morning: from Jemaa el-Fna to the Ben Youssef neighbourhood
Start at Jemaa el-Fna square to understand your walk's layout: the Koutoubia is a landmark to the west, while your route continues towards the souks and Ben Youssef neighbourhood to the north. ONMT presents the square and Koutoubia among the medina's major landmarks.
Choose the Ben Youssef madrasa as the morning's main visit. The official Visit Marrakech guide places it in the heart of the medina and explains its architectural interest. Check access arrangements before leaving. On the way, allow space for observing shops and taking detours, without turning every passage through the souks into compulsory shopping.
For orientation, save two or three landmarks rather than a route involving numerous little alleys. When checking a map, stop somewhere you do not obstruct the way. With children or a group, agree on a clearly recognisable regrouping point.
Afternoon: returning through Mouassine
After lunch, gradually head back towards Mouassine. You can choose a second visit at Le Jardin Secret, whose official website gives its address on Rue Mouassine and describes the gardens and historic water system. Keep this optional: if you have spent longer at the madrasa, a break at your accommodation may be more pleasant.
Towards the end of the day, return to Jemaa el-Fna to observe the square in a different atmosphere. Clarify the price before ordering something or accepting a service. Ask permission from people you wish to photograph and clarify any payment before taking the picture. For dinner, choose according to hunger and tiredness rather than crossing the city again for another address.
Day 2: palaces and southern neighbourhoods
Morning: Bahia Palace, then the Mellah
Devote this day to the southern medina. Start with Bahia Palace if opening is confirmed for your date. The official Visit Marrakech listing describes its cedar-wood ceilings, tilework and artisans' craftsmanship. Take time to observe the details rather than immediately looking for the next monument.
Continue with a walk in the Mellah area, then towards Place des Ferblantiers. Grouping these stops limits repeated journeys between the medina's extremities. Choose lunch in this area or return to your accommodation if nearby: the route does not require staying out all day.
Afternoon: choose just one additional visit
You can continue towards El Badi Palace, or favour the Kasbah area and Saadian Tombs. Choose whichever attracts you most and check access. Keeping both as possibilities is useful; listing them beforehand as obligations is much less so.
The heritage groupings published by Visit Marrakech associate Bahia, El Badi, the Saadian Tombs and Mellah in this sightseeing area. That geographical coherence guarantees neither simultaneous opening nor the time needed for each entrance.
If you still have energy, finish with an outdoor walk around the Koutoubia. Otherwise, stop sightseeing there. A relaxed dinner or an evening at the riad also leaves time to appreciate Marrakech, especially after two days of walking.
Day 3: Majorelle and Gueliz, or a free day
If you have booked Majorelle, leave according to your slot and allow for travel from your accommodation. This day takes place outside the core of the preceding walks: there is no need to go back and forth to the souks between visits. A taxi may make sense depending on heat, fatigue and your starting point.
After the garden, continue towards Gueliz for a walk, lunch or a break. ONMT distinguishes this neighbourhood from the medina through its avenues and contemporary urban environment. If you want to add a museum, check its opening and ticket separately; protect meal and travel time.
Would you rather stay in the medina? Use this day to revisit a neighbourhood you enjoyed, shop or discover the monument postponed the previous day. A workshop or guided visit can replace part of the walk, provided you check its content and duration. Do not layer these activities onto an already full programme.
Adjusting the programme to your return flight
If departing on the third day, keep an activity near your accommodation, confirm any baggage storage and organise the transfer before going out. Check departing flights and your airline's instructions. An excursion outside Marrakech that day would add dependence on the return journey.
The principle of this itinerary remains simple: one area at a time, one priority visit and an alternative. This lets you extend an enjoyable discovery without sacrificing a reservation across the city.
